Am I the right coach for you?
I have been coaching people who want to develop themselves and make changes in their lives for over twenty years. It started when, as a management consultant, I was invited by a corporate client to provide individual support to a group of managers to move into more senior leadership roles. The term coaching wasn't used outside of sport then, and the books and courses that are now so widely available didn't exist. I was able to call upon my extensive experience as a manager and leader, and my innate preference for a supportive 'coaching' style rather than a directive one. Increasingly, I was asked to provide coaching alongside consultancy work.
Later I trained in Neuro Linguistic Programming, a kind of practical psychology, concerned with how to develop effectiveness and high performance. Subsequently I gained a Postgraduate Diploma in Coaching Psychology. This study deepened my understanding of human behaviour, at work and in life, and provided a sound underpinning for my ongoing work as a coach.
The world of work
I have extensive experience in business leadership, people development and consultancy roles. I have both built a successful £2m turnover company and directed multi £m global change programmes in the corporate world, as well as being a non executive director and chair of a charity board. This wealth of practical experience has given me a thorough understanding of the challenges faced in today’s organisations. In addition, I was fortunate to attend executive development training at Cranfield School of Management during my corporate career. One of the modules was on team and leadership effectiveness, and this is one of the experiences that underpins my interest in the development of people.
My experience of working with people prompted a desire to extend my understanding, and to be able to work with all the issues a client might bring, not just work related or goal oriented material. Lasting change requires solutions that go deeper than thoughts and behaviours, but also consider emotions, sense of self and relationship style, which have their roots in earlier experiences. Depth is very often the key to transformation.
I decided to train as a therapeutic counsellor, so that I could confidently work with all kinds of clients, and all of their material. As a result, I hold a Certificate in Counselling Skills and a Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling, and have undertaken extensive additional training. I work as a counsellor in addition to my coaching practice, and can switch between approaches according to client needs.
This breadth and depth of training and experience means that you benefit from
A bit more about me
I've had four main careers, all building upon a theme of curiosity about work, life and people. I volunteer, as a counsellor, and as charity trustee and chair. I love learning and I really like people. There is nothing more interesting than a human being. So, my role as a coach is a great fit for me. I really want to find out what it is like to be you. Partly because you are really interesting, but also because it will help me to understand how best to help you.
I can be quite brave. I've camped out in the Alps, travelled around India - in the days before gap years existed, and trekked the Inca Trail to Machu Pichu. But I also know what it's like to be fearful, and how tough it can be to find courage.
When you work with me we will be embarking on a collaborative explorative adventure, to help you get where you want to go. You are the expert in you, and will be bringing all of your skills and talents, hopes and dreams, as well as maybe some confusion or difficulty. I am not so expert in you, but I have guided many explorations before, so you're in good hands. I look forward to getting to know you and guiding your adventure.
